Problems With HB 289

THE HOPE: To put enough regulatory burden on abortionists to lead to the shutdown of facilities, and ultimately, a reduction in abortions.

THE REALITY: The regulatory burden on abortionists, just like in other industries, leads to the shutdown of “the little guy” and ultimately allows for the monopolization of companies who can absorb the effects of the regulatory measures. Bills such as this have only helped Planned Parenthood to become stronger, and further emboldened in their approach. Further, this particular bill also establishes abortion as a legal institution by regulating it as if it is healthcare. There is no evidence that bills of this nature have saved a single life.
